A sad day in motorsports

earnhardt.jpg (12772 bytes)Motorsports and NASCAR fans lost a good friend and one of its greatest drivers today. Dale Earnhardt, 49, was fatally injured today (Sunday Feb 18th) in a multi-car accident on the final lap of the 43rd Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. My condolences go out to Dale's family.

bob1.jpg (18895 bytes)I missed the race today and as I started working on this article a friend called to tell me the sad news. How ironic, I was reducing this photo of Bob, Project33's free gratis spell checker, standing in the winner's circle at Daytona wearing his Project33.com T-shirt at the time. I was going to have a lead caption like "Project33 makes the Daytona 500 winners circle!" but joking about it seems so inappropriate now.

On the lighter side I am considering making a page with photos of Project33 T-shirts and their owners someday. If you have a shirt, snap a photo and email it to me. I know some of the shirts have ended up in far off and interesting places. Show us your shirts!

Where's Waldo?
They say the mind is the first thing to go and I believe that with every ounce of what little mind I have left. As I was getting ready to weld a new support I fabricated to go under the dash to mount my steering column, a strange thing happened. I couldn't find Waldo my welder anywhere. The last time I used it was back in April or May. It appears I lent it out and haven't got it back yet. It's not uncommon for me to lend out my welder. I have about a dozen friends who borrow it regularly because it's so portable. It's mounted entirely on an appliance dolly so it's easy to roll around and is all self contained. The trouble is I can't for the life of me remember who borrowed it last. I started making phone calls yesterday and still have a few more to make but the field is narrowing down. If you have my welder will you please return it?

One of those friends said "Geez Scott, it's not like a socket wrench or something". He's right, I feel totally stupid, like lending out my car and not remembering who I lent it to. The '70's must have been harder on me than I thought! :)

Can I interest you in some FREE computer wallpaper? I made this for myself a while back and a few of my friends suggested I make it available to all of you to download. I set my personal screen up with the icons to the left as shown, so I left the side empty for that reason. Maybe I'll make some more as the project progresses - that is if you like it. Pick your screen size below.

The Project
As far as the build-up goes, I'm starting a series of "This is what I'm up against" Articles to ask you for help and advice. It's payback time! :)

As I try to iron out all the minor details of the car I'm running into a lot of things I could use your help with. Some of the things I thought would be mindless are proving to be much more work than I anticipated. One of those things is the installation of outside door handles on the Outlaw body. The body was never intended to have outside handles. It seems I'm going against the laws of nature.

I appreciate all the help I've received so far in the way of support and advice from readers worldwide. Some guys have even sent detailed photos of their cars to show me what they did to solve similar problems. Way Cool! This media really lends itself to interactive street rodding and Project33 is living proof. It looks like I'm going to owe a lot of people favors. I know... I can give you all a ride in the car when it's finished (one at a time). Just one thing... you can't borrow it... I might not remember who I lent it to!
Until next time -
